Charley
Boorman flies in to Maryborough
Charley Boorman, of 'Long Way Round' fame (and Ewan McGregor's mate)
made a spectacular entrance into Maryborough on Saturday 23 May
by flying in on a spitfire.
Charley
is currently filming a new expedition 'By Any Means' which will
take him from Sydney to Kamchatcha (Russia) by as many different
means of transport as possible.
Charley
took the time to meet the locals and admire the collection at the
Maryborough Colonial and Military Museum. His only regrets were
that he wouldn't be around to join in the World's Greatest Pub Crawl.
He happily accepted his official stubby cooler and polo shirt before
leaving in a genuine World War II armoured vehicle, to catch the
Tilt train to Rockhampton.
Cheers
Charley!

Aussie
pride on the line against New York record
New York has stolen the Guinness World Record from Maryborough for
the most people on a pub crawl - by just 107 people.
Guinness has
confirmed the new record for the most people in a pub crawl of 3,163
crawlers was set in New York City on 14 March during the Annual
Luck of The Irish St Patrick's Pub Crawl 2009 held around the pubs
of Manhattan.
Maryborough
set the original Guinness World Record in June 2005 with almost
1,200 participants.
It reclaimed
the record back after a successful challenge from London in 2006
and thwarted another bid by Halifax, Canada in 2007. Last year 3,056
official drinkers were recorded on the 2008 Maryborough attempt.
Pub Crawl Committee
Chair Cr Anne Nioa urged all Australians to get behind Maryborough
as it attempts to wrest back the title on the 7 June.
"We once
again have Aussie pride on the line. We've beaten the Brits and
Canadians and now we'll show the Yanks how it is done as well,"
Cr Nioa said.
"We have
just found out about this attempt. It beats Maryborough's attempt
in 2008 by just 107 people which is pretty amazing when you consider
the population of Maryborough is 26,000 people compared to New York's
population of 8 million."
Cr Nioa said
the Maryborough Pub Crawl Committee was attempting to clarify details
with Guinness over the latest New York attempt and the status of
Maryborough's 2008 bid.
Maryborough's
World's Greatest Pub Crawl will be held on the Queens Birthday week,
June 7, when crawlers dressed in outrageous costumes, will set off
to the bang of an historic time cannon, to walk or ride a free shuttle
bus around Maryborough's historic old hotels
Thanks to funding
from Queensland Events, the iconic culture of the event spreads
to pub grub, with a gourmet food and beer
tasting appreciation evening at the Brolga Theatre on Friday 5 June
with master brewer, Dr Charles (Chuck) Hahn, founder of Hahn Brewery.
There will also
be a free outdoor concert with popular Queensland bands Bobkatz
and Screw Loose on Saturday 6 June.
This year, pub
crawlers are also urged to "paint the town pink" with
proceeds from the "crawl" around Maryborough's historical
hotels going to the McGrath Foundation - which provides funding
for breast care nurses in regional areas
The
event draws "crawlers" with a thirst for weird and wacky
fun from all over Australia and beyond.
Hundreds return year after year to soak up the camaraderie of the
famous pub crawl. With the feel of a good old fashioned country
B&S ball - it's a moving melting pot of ages, backgrounds, hometowns
and nationalities, with music and entertainment thrown in to spice
up the mix.
